The most annoying things that can happen to you while you’re traveling
After being on the road for over 9 years, I can safely say that traveling is both a blessing and a curse. Traveling is a blessing because it enables you to view the world in a different way, to meet people from other cultures, to try new food and to step outside of your comfort zone. It’s a curse because, well… a lot of annoying things can happen to you while you’re traveling. You’ll be put in situations that you wouldn’t have to deal with at home, you’ll have to tackle problems that you didn’t even know could be a problem, but you’ll also learn so much more about yourself. Here are some of the most annoying things that can happen to you while traveling.
Losing your passport
This is not only annoying, it’s terrifying. But one positive part of this is that we’ve all been through it and there’s always a way for you to get a new passport. The first thing you should do is contact your embassy and ask them for advice. Tell them exactly what happened and ask what measures you should take in order to either fly home or continue traveling. You can almost always get an emergency passport that’ll last you for a few days, but then you’ll have to get home ASAP.
Getting mugged
We’ve all heard of the warnings about pickpockets, but we usually never take it that seriously. We think “that’ll definitely not happen to me”. But oh, it does. You just have to make sure to keep all your valuables close to you at all times. It’s easier said than done at times, and sometimes you’re just very unlucky, but do know that it happens to many, many travelers, at least once in their journey (if not more).
People who can’t behave in hostels
Getting a good night sleep is crucial in order to handle all the sightseeing, hiking, rafting, and all other things you want to do when traveling. But since you’re a backpacker on a budget, you check in to the cheapest hostels in the biggest dorms. Sometimes you get very lucky and everyone behaves well. Often times, you’ll be unlucky. In a 16 bed dorm, there’s likely to be at least one person who’s snoring, packing their bags in the middle of the night, turning the lights on all the time and making a lot of loud noises. It’s incredibly annoying and it makes you lose your precious sleep. If it happens too often, you should consider renting an AirBnB for one night or check in to a hotel. Trust me, spending a bit more money on getting a good night sleep is money well spent.
